Guenon Monkey

Fascinating facts about the Guenon Monkey

• The TL2 landscape stretches across 4 million hectares (10 million acres), the size of Switzerland, and remains astoundingly intact, providing a massive refuge for biodiversity. Within that, the core is protected as the nearly 900,000-hectare (2.2-million-acre) Lomami National Park. multiple guenon species to coexist.
• Researchers set up three camera-trap grids between 2013 and 2016, amassing a total of 15,000 video recordings, of which nearly 600 captured lesulas in action. This massive dataset gave scientists a rare window into a species that is "incredibly hard to find," even for seasoned primatologists. By avoiding habituation, the team kept the monkeys' natural fear of humans intact, reducing hunting risk while still gathering behavior data. The sheer volume of footage turns a cryptic animal into a well-documented subject, enabling precise studies of its daily life.
• Camera-trap footage showed lesula groups can swell to up to 32 individuals, far larger than earlier estimates based on brief sightings. Families typically consist of one adult male, many females, and their young, while solitary or bachelor males also occur.
• In 2012, the description of a new monkey species from the Congo Basin with an unforgettable, humanlike countenance made global news. It was only the second new African primate discovered in 28 years.
• The video archive revealed that lesulas spend far more time on the forest floor than any other guenon in the area, with nearly 600 ground-level clips versus only 10 clips of other guenon species.
