Fascinating facts about the Lime Seed Bug

• Since the 1970s the lime seed bug has pushed well beyond its Mediterranean roots, now appearing in the Benelux nations, Central and Eastern Europe. Historically it was mainly found in the Mediterranean Basin, including North Africa, before this northward expansion began. The spread shows a clear shift in its distribution pattern over recent decades. This newer range includes countries far beyond its original habitat.
• Adult females grow to 4.5-5.4 mm, while males are slightly smaller at 4.2-5 mm. The measurements are given in both millimetres and inches.
• The bug's back is a vivid brick-red, contrasted by a blackish edge called the connexivum. Its head, prothorax, scutellum and antennae are all jet black, creating a striking three-tone appearance. This colour pattern is also seen in the nymphs, whose abdomen is red while the wing pads remain completely black. Such distinctive markings help observers quickly identify the species on host plants.
• In warm regions adult lime seed bugs hibernate together, forming dense clusters on tree trunks. The insects spend the winter as adults, gathering in large aggregates on the trunks and branches of host trees. They most often choose lime trees, including several Tilia species such as T. parviflora and T. platyphyllos. Occasionally they will use other trees like poplar, plane or horse-chestnut for these overwintering groups.
