• A mouse-deer no bigger than a rabbit can outrun a hunting dog by zigzagging through dense forest at speeds up to 25 km/h, using a gait so erratic that predators can't predict where it will turn next. Its legs are thinner than pencils but built for instant direction changes, not sustained sprints — a strategy that works because rainforest predators evolved to hunt in straight lines. This is why the chevrotain has survived 34 million years while larger deer species came and went.
• The male lesser Oriental chevrotain has two tusks growing from the roof of his mouth like a tiny vampire — elongated canines that sit behind his upper lip and only emerge when he opens wide. These fangs have nothing to do with hunting; they're for stabbing rivals during territorial disputes, often leaving scars on competitors' skulls. Females have no tusks at all, making this one of the few deer species where the males are visibly armed for combat with each other.

• Unlike every other deer species on Earth, the lesser Oriental chevrotain is fully solitary year-round, with no herds, no seasonal gatherings, and no bonds between adults except for mating. A pregnant female raises her single fawn alone for just three months before driving it away permanently; males and females only meet to breed, then separate. This radical independence means each animal must memorise its own 1-4 square kilometre territory and avoid dozens of neighbours living in the same patch of forest.
• The chevrotain's digestive system is a fermentation chamber so efficient it can extract nutrients from fruit fallen just hours before, before the flesh begins rotting — a crucial advantage in a rainforest where ripe fruit appears and vanishes within days. Its small, compartmented stomach works like a biological time machine, letting the mouse-deer eat spoiling fruit that would sicken larger competitors and extract value from food other animals abandon as toxic. This is why a 1.5 kg animal can thrive where herbivores typically need to be five times heavier.
