- At just 45 cm long and 2 kg heavy, the lesser mouse-deer ranks among the tiniest hoofed mammals on Earth. This diminutive stature is matched by a surprisingly wide range, stretching across Indochina, Myanmar's Kra Isthmus, Brunei, Cambodia, southern Yunnan in China, countless Indonesian islands, Laos, Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
- Scientists once thought the lesser mouse-deer only roamed the forest at night, but research revealed that this species which was initially believed to be nocturnal actually conduct their activities during the day. Moreover, although many births occur in May, November or December, the females are able to reproduce throughout the year.
- In Indonesian and Malaysian folklore, the mouse-deer Sang Kancil is celebrated as a cunning trickster, much like Br'er Rabbit from the Uncle Remus tales, even sharing some story plots. For instance, they both trick enemies pretending to be dead or inanimate, and both lose a race to slower opponents.
- The 26-kilometer (16-mile) Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Bridge has turned a remote Brunei district into a highway for hunters, making it easier to reach forests where mouse-deer live. Ethnic groups in Temburong traditionally hunted bearded pigs, muntjacs and mouse-deer for food, but the bridge now enables hunting for recreation and extra income. This new access raises concerns that increased pressure could outpace the species' natural resilience, especially since the mouse-deer is already threatened by feral dog predation.
- When a male lesser mouse-deer stamps his feet on the forest floor, he is sending a signal about his dominance or resource-holding potential. This foot-stamping behavior acts like a drumbeat, broadcasting his presence without the need for a chase.
