Their visual cortex has undergone a complete rewiring: cone cells shrunk away, rod cells multiplied, and a reflective layer behind the retina — the tapetum lucidum — bounces light back through the photoreceptors twice, squeezing every photon for information. This brain-heavy investment is why they need to eat constantly: fruit and insects every 15 minutes during their active night.
• In the Amazon rainforest, territories of different night monkey groups exist in a vertical stack: some pairs hunt in the canopy 40 metres up, others work the mid-storey 20 metres down, and some specialise in the understory.
