• A leopard gecko can shed and eat its own skin within minutes of moulting — a behaviour called ecdysis-feeding that recycles 90% of the nutrients it just lost. Most reptiles do this, but leopard geckos are compulsive about it, sometimes consuming their shed before it fully separates. This trick is essential in the desert, where moisture and minerals are scarce enough that wasting either could mean death.
• Unlike most reptiles, leopard geckos have moveable eyelids and can blink — a trait they share with only a handful of other lizard species. They also lack the adhesive toe pads that let other geckos scale walls; instead, their feet are built for gripping desert rock and soil. This trade-off tells the story of their evolution: they're ground hunters in rocky scrubland, not climbers.
• A leopard gecko's tail is a fat storage organ that can weigh as much as the rest of its body combined. When food is scarce in winter (a season when insects nearly vanish in Central Asia), it lives off this reserve for weeks — metabolic frugality so extreme that a well-fed gecko can survive 10 months without a meal. The tail also autotomizes (detaches) when a predator grabs it, thrashing on the ground to distract while the gecko escapes.
• Leopard geckos navigate and hunt using heat-sensing pits along their upper and lower jaws that detect a warm cricket's body warmth from centimetres away — a system so sensitive they can hunt in total darkness. Their pupils shrink to vertical slits in bright desert sunlight but widen into near-perfect circles at night, adapting the eye's light-gathering power by up to 350 times.
• A female leopard gecko can store sperm for up to 6 months and lay up to 200 eggs in a single breeding season across multiple clutches — each egg roughly the size of a pea. In the wild, she buries them in warm sand and never returns; in captivity, this behaviour puzzled early breeders until they realised the incubation temperature alone determines whether hatchlings are male or female, with no chromosomal sex determination like mammals.
