• During the dry season the lemon pansy's wing markings become obscure and pale, and the wing edges turn angular and jagged, giving the butterfly a muted appearance. This colour shift contrasts sharply with the wet-season form, whose markings are distinct and vivid and whose wings are slightly more rounded. The angular, dull wings help the insect blend into dried leaf litter, providing effective camouflage on the forest floor.
• The lemon pansy perches very low to the ground, allowing observers to approach within arm's reach without startling it. It often basks with its wings spread open toward the sun, feeding with its wings half open while remaining close to the substrate. A fairly strong flier, it darts just above the ground with rapid wingbeats and habitually returns to the same favourite spots to settle again. Its low-level activity makes it easy to watch up close.
• When disturbed, the lemon pansy caterpillar rolls up and drops from the leaf to the ground as a defensive escape. The larva lives on the underside of leaves, where its dull black colour with a faint blue sheen and a distinct orange ring behind the head provides concealment. Its body is cylindrical, uniformly thick and covered with rows of spines that are branched at the tips, adding a further deterrent to predators.
