• One bite delivers enough venom to kill 100 adult humans—but the coastal taipan rarely strikes. In its 50 years of documented use in Australian zoos and research, there's never been a recorded fatality from a bite in the wild. The snake's real prey is small mammals weighing 200 grams, and it doses its venom precisely by bite pressure, not by maximising it. This is a predator that calculates.
• The coastal taipan can strike, inject venom, and release its prey in under 0.9 seconds—then track the dying animal by smell alone through dense mangrove roots and leaf litter. No vision required. Its venom doesn't just kill; it paralyses the nervous system so fast that a rat stops moving within 30 seconds. Speed here isn't about reflexes—it's about efficiency.
• Coastal taipans give birth to 4–24 live babies, fully venomous from day one, without any parental care. A newborn is 45–60 centimetres long and can kill a chicken. This is evolution's insurance policy: in the tropics, where predators and competitors are everywhere, you can't afford to protect your young, so you make them lethal instead.
