• A Laysan albatross can smell a dead fish from 60 kilometres away — further than the distance from London to Brighton. Their nostrils sit in a tube running along the top of their beak, funnelling odours directly to a brain region twice the size of a human's. They navigate the open ocean using this smell-map, finding floating carrion and feeding opportunities invisible to every other seabird.
• After spending four years at sea without touching land, a Laysan albatross returns to the exact same patch of sand where it was born — and often finds its lifelong partner waiting. Some pairs have stayed together for 40+ years, raising a single chick every spring. One documented female, named Wisdom, was at least 70 years old and still breeding in 2021, making her the oldest known wild seabird.
• Each breeding season, a Laysan albatross undertakes a 5,000-kilometre foraging loop from its nest on a remote Pacific island, returning every few days to feed its chick. The round trip takes 12 days at sea hunting squid and fish, powered by wings locked into a rigid V-shape that barely flap — they soar on wind currents instead, barely burning energy for hours. Over a year they fly up to 900,000 kilometres, yet their metabolic rate is lower than a chicken's.
