• Those two impossibly long tail streamers—sometimes stretching 65 centimetres beyond the bird's body—are not for flying. They're pure courtship display, so cumbersome that a red-tailed tropicbird actually flies slower and less manoeuvrable than it would without them. Males grow them longest, dangling them during aerial dances above tropical oceans. Evolution chose romance over efficiency.
• Red-tailed tropicbirds hunt by plunge-diving from heights up to 30 metres, folding their wings and rocketing toward the water at speeds exceeding 100 km/h to snatch fish and squid in a single explosive moment. Their nostrils close shut during impact—a biological switch that prevents water flooding their lungs. Miss the dive and they have to climb back to altitude and try again; every hunt is high-stakes.
• Unlike most seabirds, red-tailed tropicbirds are almost entirely solitary hunters across open ocean, spending months at sea without ever landing on water or touching soil. They sleep on the wing in short microsleep bursts, closing one brain hemisphere at a time while the other stays alert. They can vanish 1,000 kilometres from the nearest land and still find their way home to the same cliff ledge.
• A chick takes longer to fledge than almost any other seabird its size—up to 11 weeks in the nest, during which the parent makes solo foraging trips lasting 24 to 48 hours, leaving the youngster unfed and unattended on a rocky ledge. When it finally flies, it has never seen another young tropicbird and will not return to land for two or three years.
• Red-tailed tropicbirds have air sacs that extend into their hollow bones and even between their muscles—an adaptation so extreme that their skeleton weighs almost nothing. This makes them gravity-defiant sprinters in steep climbs but also means they're supremely vulnerable to oil spills and fishing nets; their feathers offer almost no buoyancy when waterlogged, and they cannot survive a swim.
