• Emperor penguins can hold their breath for up to 22 minutes and dive deeper than 500 metres — deeper than most submarines go. Their blood redirects away from the skin and limbs to keep the brain and heart alive in crushing pressure and near-freezing water. A single dive hunt for toothfish or lanternfish can burn 2,000 calories. • A penguin's skeleton is denser than any other bird's — their bones are solid, not hollow, and they're twice as thick.
