- Layard's palm squirrel forms a lifelong pair bond, staying with the same partner until death. The monogamous pair builds its nest in the forest canopy from grass, leaves and plant fibres, where they raise about three young each breeding cycle. Breeding is timed with the rainy seasons, so litters appear when moisture peaks. This stable partnership supports their diurnal, canopy-living lifestyle.
- Unlike most squirrels, Layard's palm squirrel supplements its mainly plant diet with insects when vegetation is limited. It regularly eats fruits, young shoots and nuts, adding insects during scarce herbivore food periods. As a diurnal animal it forages openly in full daylight, moving through the forest canopy. This flexible feeding habit helps it survive seasonal shortages.
- The species is endemic to Sri Lanka's central highlands, most commonly spotted in the Knuckles mountain range and other high-altitude zones of the western basin. While a few records exist from Trincomalee and Matara districts, its presence outside the central hills remains uncertain. It inhabits subtropical and tropical moist lowland and montane forests, preferring the forest canopy. Its restricted range makes it vulnerable to habitat loss.

It spends almost all of its time high above the ground, only descending rarely, which keeps it largely out of reach of many ground predators. When dusk arrives the squirrel's behaviour changes and it begins to vocalise loudly, filling the evening air with noisy calls.
