Fascinating facts about the Javan Rusa
- When alarmed, a rusa stag lets out an extremely loud honk that warns any other deer nearby. The species usually moves in small groups or pairs, though males are often solitary. They are rarely seen in the open and are very difficult to approach because of their keen senses and cautious instincts. Their nocturnal habits mean they are most active at night, even though they also graze by day.
- Javan rusa obtain almost all their water from the vegetation they eat, so they rarely drink. As with other deer species, they mainly feed on grass, leaves and fallen fruit, which supplies most of their fluid needs. Most of their fluid requirements are met by the food they consume, so they hardly drink water. This reliance on plant moisture allows them to survive in areas where water sources are scarce.
- In its native range the species has lost roughly 10,000 individuals over the past two decades and likely faces further decline. The Javan rusa natively occurs on the islands of Java, Bali and Timor in Indonesia, where the drop has been most pronounced. As a result it has been listed as vulnerable in its native range and was declared a protected species under Indonesian law in 2018. Conservation efforts now focus on safeguarding remaining habitats.
