• In 1971, a biologist named Eviatar Nevo captured 5 Italian wall lizards from an island off Croatia and released them on a tiny island called Tino off Massachusetts. Fifty years later, 8,000 of their descendants now live there — and they've evolved a completely new muscle structure in their guts that their ancestors never had, allowing them to digest plant matter better than any of their European cousins. Evolution works fast enough to watch. In half a century, island isolation rewired a species.
• When a predator strikes, an Italian wall lizard can detach its tail and leave it thrashing on the ground as a decoy — but the lost tail costs them. They lose up to 9% of their body length and sprint 30% slower for months while it regrows. The new tail is made of cartilage instead of bone, weaker and shorter. A tailless lizard survives the attack but pays the price in speed, which is everything when you weigh only 8 grams.
• These lizards live on heat-blasted rocky slopes where ground temperatures hit 60°C on summer afternoons. They cope by switching which side of a rock they bask on every few hours — adjusting their exposure to match the sun's moving shadows. A lizard that can't read light and shadow dies of either overheating or cold stupor before noon. Their survival is a minute-by-minute calculation of solar geometry.
• Male Italian wall lizards are compulsive architects. Each male carves out a territory and marks it with femoral gland secretions — chemical graffiti that warns rivals and attracts females. The same males perform rhythmic head-bobbing displays dozens of times a day, a repetitive dance that costs energy but signals dominance to every watching eye. The most exhausting performers win the best real estate.
• Females can store sperm inside their bodies for months after mating and choose which eggs to fertilize based on which male's sperm will produce the fittest offspring — a form of sexual selection that happens invisibly, inside her. This cryptic choice means the fastest or strongest male at mating season isn't guaranteed to be the genetic father. Evolution happens in secret, in the female's body, long after the male has moved on.
