Common Slug-eater

Fascinating facts about the Common Slug-eater

• The common slug eater is viviparous, delivering its offspring live rather than laying eggs. Typical litters contain three to twelve juveniles, but exceptionally large females can produce as many as twenty-two newborns. Each hatchling measures between eight and eleven centimetres, and the total mass of a full brood can actually outweigh the mother after parturition. Births occur in the southern-hemisphere late summer, specifically in January and February.
• When it feels threatened, the snake coils into a tight spiral with its head tucked in the centre, a posture that mirrors the Afrikaans name meaning "tobacco roll". At the same time it releases a foul-smelling fluid from glands located near the base of its tail, creating a chemical deterrent. This defensive display combines both visual and olfactory warnings to discourage predators. The behaviour is a characteristic response to alarm.
• The slug eater locates its mollusc prey by flicking its tongue and using chemoreception to sense snails and slugs. Once detected, it swallows the animal whole before defensive mucus can harden, often extracting the soft body through the shell opening. If the shell is too robust, the snake may smash it against a rock while holding the prey in its jaws. This specialised hunting technique allows it to exploit a niche food source.
• Adults reach only thirty to forty centimetres in length. They display variable colouration, typically an olive-green to brown back, grey flanks, a yellowish or cream belly and a black vertebral stripe that may be complete.
• Its distribution includes Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mozambique, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe. Being endemic to Africa, the snake inhabits regions that provide moist microhabitats suitable for its slug and snail diet.
