Indian Chameleon

Fascinating facts about the Indian Chameleon

• A mid-Miocene oceanic leap likely whisked the Indian chameleon from Arabia to South Asia, explaining why it lives far from its African relatives. This ancient journey shows how sea currents can reshape reptile lineages.
• When a male brightens his skin, he isn’t blending into leaves; he’s broadcasting readiness to mate. Darker shades, on the other hand, signal submission during territorial squabbles, turning colour into a social language.
• From snout to vent the Indian chameleon reaches up to 7 in, and its prehensile tail adds another 8 in. That extra tail length lets it grip branches securely while it hunts from a slow, swaying perch.
• Its tongue can snap out several feet to snatch insects, a feat made possible by an extremely long, sticky projectile that launches faster than the eye can track.
• Unlike many reptiles, this chameleon lacks an external ear and a tympanum, yet it navigates its arboreal world using independently moving eyes and a bony casque studded with crests and tubercles.
