A calf watches its mother corner fish in shallow water, learns which squid hide under fallen logs, and memorises the acoustic landscape of its home estuary. • In the last 30 years, their population in Hong Kong's Pearl River — once the stronghold of this subspecies — crashed from 1,800 individuals to around 2,300 remaining in all of Southeast Asia.
