• A coral crab's claws can regrow a lost limb in as little as 4–5 months, complete with working muscles and nerves. But here's the trade-off: the new claw is always smaller than the original, sometimes only half the size. If a crab loses both claws at once, it faces a months-long vulnerability where it can't feed or defend itself — a gamble that explains why they're so aggressive about keeping their weapons intact.
• Coral crabs live inside branching corals like Acropora, carving out chambers that fit their body like a custom apartment. They don't damage the coral; instead, the crab and coral form a two-way bargain. The crab eats algae that would otherwise smother the coral's polyps, and the coral's branches shelter the crab from predators and the open ocean. Break apart a coral head and you'll find crabs of different sizes stacked in separate rooms, all rent-paying tenants in the same building.
• Female coral crabs can hold up to 10,000 eggs in a brood pouch under their abdomen, but they only release the larvae during specific lunar cycles and at night. The timing is ruthless calculation: larvae released when the moon is dark have a better chance of drifting to new reefs unseen by filter-feeding corals and fish. A single female's timing decision can seed entire reef populations.
• The Indo-Pacific is home to roughly 20 recognised coral crab species, and many are so small (some under 1 cm across) and so perfectly matched to their host coral that scientists didn't describe them until the 1980s.
