• The huron skipper was recognized as a distinct species in 2022 after being treated as a subspecies of Atalopedes campestris. A taxonomic review by Zhang et al. elevated it to full species status.
• The huron skipper's wingspan measures just 1 to 1½ inches, equivalent to 2.5 to 3.8 centimetres, making it a small grass skipper. Males show a tawny orange ground colour with wide dark borders, while females are darker with olive tones and more pronounced chevron patterns on the ventral side. Both sexes have hindwings with dark veins, and females bear two glassy spots near the centre of the forewing and additional smaller spots near the tip.
• Male huron skippers are easily identified by a striking wide black stigma on the dorsal side of their tawny orange wings, a feature that stands out against the broad dark borders framing each wing. In addition to the stigma, the males' hindwings display prominent dark veins that accentuate the wing's pattern.
• Each year the huron skipper undertakes a migration in late summer and autumn, moving northward from its core range. While it normally lives from the southeastern United States across to Colorado, southeastern Arizona and down through South America, the seasonal movement can carry individuals far beyond their usual habitats.
