• A butterfly the size of a postage stamp moves like a pinball — the Huron skipper's wings beat 20 times per second, faster than a hummingbird's, letting it dart and hover over prairie grass in ways larger butterflies cannot. This speed comes from oversized flight muscles packed into a 1-centimetre body. They're built for precision, not distance: they rarely fly more than a few metres from their hatching spot, making them ghosts of the grasslands that most people never see.
• The Huron skipper's caterpillar builds a sleeping bag from rolled grass blades, sealing itself inside with silk before it pupates. Unlike most butterflies that hide in open chrysalises, this skipper takes construction seriously — each larva creates a shelter so tight that parasitic wasps struggle to penetrate it. In Ontario and Michigan, populations have collapsed so severely that some have gone locally extinct, yet the species remains unlisted for protection simply because few people have noticed it's gone.
• Huron skippers are escape artists with a twist: when threatened, they don't flee straight — they zigzag in tight, unpredictable loops that make them nearly impossible to follow with the eye. This jinking flight is powered by the same over-muscled thorax that gives them their frantic hovering speed. For a butterfly that weighs less than a grain of rice, erratic movement is survival.
