• A house mouse's teeth never stop growing — they gain roughly 0.3 millimetres every single day for life. To keep them worn down, mice gnaw constantly: wood, plastic, insulation, wiring. This is why a single mouse in your walls can sound like a construction crew. Their incisors are harder than steel, made of iron-reinforced enamel that human dentists still don't fully understand.
• House mice can squeeze through a hole the width of a ballpoint pen — roughly 7 millimetres. A gap the size of a dime is plenty. This geometry, combined with a flexible spine and collapsible ribcage, makes them almost impossible to keep out once they're in the building. For every mouse you see, there are usually 4–8 more hidden inside the walls.
• Within 8 weeks of birth, a female house mouse can have her first litter of 5–6 pups. Those pups are weaned and sexually mature in just 6 weeks. One pregnant female arriving on a ship in 1890 became an invasion: today, 1.6 billion mice live in Australian homes and farms, costing the country £200 million annually in crop damage — a population explosion that started with a single stowaway.
• A house mouse's heart beats 600 times per minute at rest — ten times faster than a human's. Their metabolism burns so hot that they must eat 15–20 times per day to stay alive. This is why poison and starvation often fail: they need almost no food to survive, can survive on crumbs alone, and their rapid heartbeat lets them metabolize toxins faster than slower animals.
• The house mouse was the first mammal to have its entire genome sequenced (in 2002), revealing that 95% of its DNA is shared with humans. Since then, over 10 million genetically modified laboratory strains have been created. Every drug tested for human safety, every disease model studied in medicine, traces back to this 20-gram animal. The mice we've tried to eradicate have become the keystone of modern medicine.
