• A hairy-nosed wombat produces cube-shaped droppings — the only land mammal on Earth that does. Each pellet is roughly the size of a marble and has flat sides so sharp they hold their geometry for weeks. Scientists still don't fully understand how the wombat's intestines manufacture these perfect cubes, but the leading theory suggests the faeces spend extra time in the colon, where muscular contractions carve the edges. The cubes don't roll away in grass, so they pile up as scent markers — a territorial billboard that stays put.
• At just 35 centimetres tall and 3.5 kilograms, a hairy-nosed wombat is shorter than a wine bottle but built like a tank. Their skeleton is 40 percent denser than a human's, with limbs made almost entirely of solid muscle and bone so thick it barely contains marrow. This density gives them the power to excavate burrows up to 3 metres long with their bare claws — and the durability to charge backwards at a predator and crush it against their reinforced rump.
• The hairy-nosed wombat has the lowest metabolic rate of any carnivore's relative — their digestion is so slow that a single meal can take up to 18 days to pass through their body. This glacial processing lets them extract maximum nutrition from low-quality grass and survive on areas where other animals would starve. A wombat can gain weight on feed that would leave a sheep hungry, making them the ultimate grazers for Australia's harshest inland grasslands.
• Hairy-nosed wombats communicate using scent glands on their rump that they drag across rocks and burrow entrances, creating a smell-based family directory. Each wombat's odour signature is as individual as a fingerprint — males can identify females in oestrus and bachelor status from a single scent mark. This olfactory system is so precise that wombats living in the same burrow warren can maintain separate territories using only smell, never needing direct confrontation.
• Only 300 to 350 hairy-nosed wombats remain in the wild, living in a single population in central Queensland. In the 1980s fewer than 50 individuals survived, rescued only when conservationists moved breeding stock to a second sanctuary site. Today they live in one of the most fragmented ranges of any Australian mammal — their entire species depends on two protected areas roughly 100 kilometres apart, making them one disease outbreak away from extinction.
