• Guinea baboons live in the smallest social groups of any baboon species — just 10 to 15 individuals, compared to 50-plus in their cousins. This tiny troop size means every baboon knows every other baboon intimately, and a death or injury reshapes the entire group's politics. Scientists think this compact structure lets them thrive in the harsh, food-sparse savannas of West Africa, where bigger groups would starve.
• A male guinea baboon's canine teeth can grow to 2 centimetres long — sharp enough to slice through skin like a razor blade. Yet these teeth are rarely drawn. Instead, males settle disputes through loud yawning contests: they open their mouths as wide as possible to flash those fangs, and whoever looks more intimidating wins without a single bite. It's pure bluff, and it works.
• Guinea baboons eat insects so obsessively that they've become walking pest-control systems for West African farmers. A troop will spend hours picking grasshoppers, beetles, and termites from the soil with surgical precision, eating hundreds in a single day. This diet makes them nutritional outliers — far more insectivorous than other baboons, who lean heavily on fruit and seeds.
• The bond between a mother and her infant is so strong that other females will abandon their own nursing young to help raise someone else's baby. These 'allomothers' carry infants, groom them, and even risk their lives defending them from predators. Some baboons dedicate years to raising young that aren't genetically theirs — a sacrifice that strengthens the entire troop's survival odds.
• Guinea baboons are the only baboon species confined entirely to West Africa, clinging to a narrow strip of savanna in Senegal, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, and Sierra Leone. Their range has shrunk by half in the last 40 years due to habitat loss and hunting, yet they remain virtually unknown to conservation science. No organisation currently runs a dedicated protection programme for them, making them the forgotten cousins of the primate world.
