• Grey Pansy wings flash a pale lavender-brown canvas edged with a striking pattern of black bands and ochre-yellow-bordered ovals that look like tiny lanterns. The forewing bears three short, sinuous black bands, a broader band beyond the cell apex, and two discal black fasciae, one highly sinuous and angulate above vein 4, the other straighter and lunular, each flanked by whitish ovals with dark centers. A narrow lunular dark band, followed by sinuous subterminal and terminal lines, crowns the wing tip, while the hindwing mirrors this design with a slender black loop from veins 6 to 4 and similar dark-centered ovals in interspaces 2-6. This intricate mosaic not only dazzles predators but also helps the butterfly blend into dappled forest light, a visual camouflage that boosts its survival.
• Grey Pansies span a vast Asian range, from Bangladesh and India across southern China, through Cambodia, Indochina, the Malay Peninsula, western and central Indonesia, all the way to the Philippines. Their larvae are feeding on a suite of plants such as rice (Oryza), Pseuderanthemum, Strobilanthes, Asteracantha longifolia, Alternanthera philoxeroides, Barleria, Hygrophila lancea, and Hygrophila salicifolia.
• The grey pansy lives across a broad swathe of South and Southeast Asia, occupying both mainland and island habitats. It is recorded from Bangladesh and India through southern China, extending into Cambodia and the Indochinese region, as well as the Malay Peninsula, western and central Indonesia, and the Philippines.
• During the dry season male grey pansies modify their wing pattern, losing the full series of eye-spot rows that are typical in the wet season; only the yellow-centred ovals remain visible, giving a much simpler appearance.
• Female grey pansies bear markedly heavier and clearer wing markings than their male counterparts, with darker transverse bands and ocherous-tinged spaces between them.
