• Male orange sulphurs flash a ultraviolet signal. Their hindwings carry scales that both reflect UV and pterin pigments that soak up light below 550 nm, sharpening the iridescence. By cutting down diffuse UV bounce, the wing's sparkle becomes more directional and pure, making the flash brightest at the top of each wing beat when seen from directly above. This dazzling cue lets males stand out in the sky and helps females spot the right partner amid green foliage.
• Female orange sulphurs are picky about mates and time their re-mating like a clock. After a male gives her a nutrient-rich spermatophore, she waits until it erodes before seeking another partner, typically every four to six days in summer. Over a lifetime she will mate up to four times.
• In the wild, orange sulphurs live just weeks, but captivity can stretch their lives nearly a month. Captive adult females have been found to live up to 39 days, while field studies in Virginia recorded wild females surviving about 14 days and males about 25 days. • The orange sulphur's range leapt eastward in the late 1800s, riding the wave of human land use. Historically a western Nearctic butterfly, it was pushed east by logging and the planting of alfalfa fields, expanding now from southern Mexico across the whole of North America.
