• A green monkey's stomach is divided into three chambers — part ruminant, part primate — letting them ferment unripe fruit like a cow does. The trick is their first chamber is a specialised pouch where bacteria break down tough plant matter before the food reaches the main stomach. • Green monkeys have a distinctive alarm vocabulary: one call for eagles, a different one for snakes, another for leopards. When a juvenile hears the leopard alarm from an adult, it runs up a tree. Females stay in the group for life and inherit their mother's social rank — a daughter of a high-status mother is born into privilege. Males migrate between groups every few years, gambling on climbing the hierarchy elsewhere. This female-bonded system, rare among primates, means a troop's stability rests entirely on its mothers.
• Green monkeys were transported across the Atlantic during the slave trade — accidentally trapped in cargo holds and deliberately stowed — and now wild populations survive on Caribbean islands like St. Kitts and Nevis where they've lived for 400 years.
