Green-headed Tanager

Fascinating facts about the Green-headed Tanager

• A tiny 13.5-centimetre flash of colour darts through Brazil’s Atlantic forest, slipping past leaves as if it were part of the canopy itself. Its blue-green head blends with sun-dappled foliage, letting it disappear despite its bright plumage. This camouflage shows how even the most vivid birds can hide in plain sight, turning color into stealth.
• Weighing just 18 grams, about the heft of a single AA battery, this bird flits between branches in orchards and city parks as easily as it does in untouched forest. Its feather-light frame lets it navigate dense canopies without disturbing the surrounding leaves. Such feather-weight agility lets it thrive in both wild and human-altered landscapes.
• Living across southeastern Brazil, far-eastern Paraguay, and the Misiones region of Argentina, the species spans three countries but remains tied to humid forest habitats. Its presence in orchards and parks indicates a surprising tolerance for fragmented habitats. This adaptability hints that protecting even small green spaces can support its continued survival.
