• A male greater bird-of-paradise spends up to 8 hours every morning perfecting a single dance move — the same flip, twist, and bounce — until his muscles cramp and his feathers are soaked in sweat. He does this for months before females will even look at him. Evolution has turned courtship into a full-time job that demands more physical commitment than hunting or surviving.
• Their plumage contains feathers that reflect light at wavelengths no other bird can produce — deep purples and blacks so glossy they look computer-generated, created by microscopic ridges on each feather that scatter light in ways our eyes have only recently learned to measure.
