About the Southern Cassowary

Stepping out of the shadows of a Queensland rainforest, the southern cassowary seems assembled from different evolutionary experiments: a velociraptor's claw, an iguana's casque, and a vivid blue and red face. The world's third-largest bird and indisputably its most dangerous, the cassowary is also one of Australia's most critical seed dispersers, the only animal large enough to pass whole the fruits of dozens of rainforest trees. Without them, entire plant communities would vanish.
