• The Great Banded Grayling is a master of camouflage — its brown and grey wings blend so perfectly with sun-baked soil that predators walk past without noticing. But flip the butterfly over and you'll see something hidden: a row of pale eyespots arranged like a pearl necklace along the underwing. These fake eyes confuse attackers, making them strike the wing's edge instead of the body — a decoy so convincing the butterfly survives the slash and flies away.
• Most butterflies are sun-worshippers, but the Great Banded Grayling is a shade-seeker. On scorching European afternoons when other insects bake on open ground, this species hunts for patches of shadow cast by rocks or sparse bushes. It rests with wings folded vertically — a trick that makes its body invisible while keeping its wings angled away from the sun's heat. This simple behaviour lets it stay active in grasslands where the temperature would ground other butterflies.
• The caterpillar of this species has a built-in parachute. When it hatches from the egg, it's so small that wind could carry it away — so it drops a silk thread to anchor itself, then grows eating wild grasses at night, hidden in leaf litter. By the time it pupates, it's surrounded itself with a fortress of vegetation, disappearing so completely into the dry grass that even entomologists struggle to find them in the field.
• Great Banded Graylings vanish for months. In summer, adults emerge for a brief window in July and August, then disappear back into the grass. The caterpillars spend up to 10 months dormant in the soil, a lifestyle that means the entire species synchronises its life to match the dry season rhythms of southern European grasslands — any butterfly emerging too early or too late won't find mates or food.
• This butterfly's range is fragile. It survives only in pockets of unfarmable, rocky grassland from Spain to Greece — places too steep or too poor for agriculture. As Europeans have intensified farming and abandoned marginal land, grayling populations have split into isolated islands. A butterfly that evolved to thrive in harsh, open terrain now depends on the survival of the places we don't want to develop.
