Large Blue

Fascinating facts about the Large Blue

• A single specimen was first noted in Britain in 1795, yet by 1979 the species vanished from the island entirely, showing how quickly a once-common insect can disappear. The loss sparked a wave of failed rescue attempts until a new, ant-focused strategy finally turned the tide. Today the butterfly is listed as near-threatened, reminding us that even tiny creatures need precise knowledge to survive.
• When the caterpillar is ready to leave its thyme host, it can be as long as half an inch – just 13 mm – and may spend up to nine months before undergoing metamorphosis, making the timing of ant encounters crucial for its survival.
• The adult's wings can stretch to 2 inches (51 mm), making it one of the larger members of the gossamer-winged family. Its speckled black dots on a blue backdrop act like a visual fingerprint, helping researchers spot it among meadow flora. Size and pattern together give the species a clear identity in a crowded butterfly world.
• In the 1950s Britain still hosted about 100,000 adult large blues, but by 1978 almost half of the 91 known sites had vanished, a 48 % loss that foretold full extinction two years later. The rapid decline underscored that habitat change alone couldn't explain the crash; the hidden ant relationship was the missing piece. Understanding that link has become a cornerstone for modern butterfly conservation.
• A long-term project led by the Royal Entomological Society reported a surge in numbers in 2022, with the species described as “thriving.” Success with the large blue has also lifted nearby violet-feeding butterflies, showing how rescuing one specialist can ripple through an ecosystem. It proves that targeted, science-backed actions can reverse even the bleakest trends.
