Fascinating facts about the Grayling

• A grayling can fold its wings like a tent over its body and pivot to face the sun — a move called 'basking posture' that lets it absorb heat while hiding its underside from predators. On cool mornings, when other butterflies are grounded, graylings are already airborne, using the sun as a thermometer and the ground as a mirror.
• The false eyespot on each hindwing isn't decoration — it's a survival strategy. Predators attack the wing's lower half instead of the body. Graylings lose these wings and live on, while a bird-strike to the head is fatal. A single worn eyespot can be the difference between life and death.
• Graylings spend most of their lives in grass, not in trees. The caterpillars feed only at night, crawling up grass stems in darkness to eat the leaves, then dropping to the soil at dawn. This 24-hour rhythm keeps them hidden from daytime hunters for the 2–3 weeks it takes to grow.
• Despite living across Europe from Spain to Russia, graylings rarely travel more than 100 metres in their lifetime. Populations separated by just a few kilometres can evolve different wing patterns and flight speeds in as few as 50 generations — making them a living laboratory for how quickly species adapt.
• In hot, dry summers, grayling numbers spike across southern Europe, but in cool, wet years, northern populations collapse. Climate shifts are moving the edge of their range northward by up to 5 kilometres per decade — one of the fastest range expansions recorded in European butterflies, reshaping grassland ecosystems as they go.
