• A European garden spider's web can catch and hold insects weighing up to half its own body weight — the silk is five times stronger than steel of the same thickness, yet weighs almost nothing. The spider produces seven different types of silk from different glands, each one engineered for a different job: anchor lines, frame threads, sticky spirals, egg wrapping. When a fly hits that web at 2 metres per second, the silk absorbs the impact without snapping, holding the prey motionless while the spider decides whether to eat it now or wrap it for later.
• The female is up to three times heavier than the male, and she'll often eat him after mating — sometimes mid-copulation. This isn't cruelty; it's economics. The male's body is pure protein, and she needs those calories to produce between 400 and 800 eggs, each wrapped in silk and sealed into a golden egg sac the size of a marble. She'll die in autumn after completing this task, never seeing her offspring hatch in spring.
• Those white cross-shaped markings on the female's abdomen are a species signature, visible from metres away — yet no two spiders have exactly the same pattern. Scientists still don't know why she advertises herself so boldly when stealth might keep her safer from wasps and birds. The males seem to recognize it instantly, which suggests the pattern evolved as a mating signal strong enough to override every other instinct.
• A European garden spider can taste with her feet. Chemoreceptors on each leg detect prey vibrations and chemical traces, allowing her to distinguish between a struggling fly and a dead leaf caught in her web within seconds. She'll rush across the web at remarkable speed (for a spider) to wrap a live insect, but ignore debris entirely — a precision that prevents her from wasting precious silk on inedible tangles.
• By late summer, gardens across Europe fill with webs jewelled with dew at dawn — a sign that populations are booming before the autumn die-off. Each spider's lifespan is barely a year, yet in that time she'll build dozens of new webs if the old ones are damaged, sometimes relocating to a better hunting spot within hours. This rapid web-building and nest-abandonment strategy means a single garden might support hundreds of these spiders, each one working independently to control the insect population that would otherwise explode.
