About the Cape Kurper

The Cape kurper (Sandelia capensis) is a striking member of the climbing gouramis, reaching up to 25 cm and 200 g. Its body shimmers in shades of yellow to golden brown, punctuated by dark dorsal markings that spill onto the dorsal and anal fins. Males turn up the colour palette during the breeding season, flaunting intensified hues, dark vertical bars, and a blackened lower mandible, while females retain a more subdued tone. This fish navigates the coastal rivers of South Africa’s Western and Eastern Cape, from the Coega River at Algoa Bay through the Cape Flats up to the Verlorevlei River, and even the introduced Clanwilliam Olifants system. It thrives in a mosaic of habitats, rocky, swift streams and languid, vegetated waters, yet it favours quiet marginal zones where submerged roots, branches, and aquatic plants offer shelter. A versatile predator, the Cape kurper snaps up insects, other invertebrates, tiny fish, and crabs, displaying the opportunistic feeding style typical of Anabantidae. In the southern summer, males claim a substrate site, defend it aggressively, and perform a bubble-blowing courtship that culminates in a vigorous chase and spawning ritual. After the female deposits adhesive eggs, the male assumes sole guardianship, tending the clutch and the fry that cling to the substrate. Anglers sometimes witness a dramatic ‘playing-dead’ act, only for the fish to wriggle free once the hook is removed, a testament to its cunning survival tactics.
