Fascinating facts about the Gorilla

• A silverback gorilla can lift roughly 1,800 kg — about 10 times his own body weight. Yet he spends most of his day plucking leaves and stems so gently that he doesn't bruise them. This isn't weakness masquerading as strength; it's precision. A gorilla's fingers are so sensitive he can peel a banana without tearing the skin, and he judges which plants are ripe by touch alone. Power without control is just damage.
• Gorillas have been observed mourning their dead. When a young gorilla dies, mothers carry the body for days, cradling it, grooming it, sometimes returning to the spot long after. In 2019, a western lowland gorilla named Colo — the first gorilla born in captivity — died at 60, and her troop exhibited behaviours scientists had never before documented in apes: deliberate silence, avoidance of her usual resting place, and what observers called 'listlessness.' We still don't fully understand what they feel.
• A gorilla's night nest takes 5 minutes to build and is used only once. Each evening, a gorilla bends branches into a cushioned platform high in the canopy, sleeps there, then abandons it forever. Over a lifetime, a gorilla builds thousands of these temporary beds. Their bodies are so heavy — a male can weigh 180 kg — that even branches shaped by their own hands cannot support them twice. Each night is architecture that dies at dawn.
• In 1986, a 3-year-old girl fell into the Cincinnati Zoo's gorilla enclosure. A silverback named Harambe lifted her, held her gently, then dragged her. Zoo staff shot him dead within minutes. The footage sparked global debate about wild minds in captive spaces — and raised an uncomfortable question: was Harambe being aggressive, curious, or protective? A decade later, we still can't agree. It revealed how little we truly understand about gorilla cognition when it diverges from our expectations.
• Gorillas are largely vegetarian — more so than any other ape — yet they have canine teeth as long as a house cat's. These fangs are weapons they almost never use. Silverbacks settle disputes through chest-beating, charging, and physical displays that look catastrophic but rarely end in bloodshed. Evolution gave them tools for lethal violence, but their behaviour evolved away from using them. Perhaps that's what genuine strength actually looks like: having the capacity for destruction and choosing not to.
