• A gopher tortoise digs a burrow the size of a small house — up to 40 feet long and 9 feet deep — then spends its entire life in that same tunnel system, sometimes sharing it with 360 other species including burrowing owls, indigo snakes, and beetles found nowhere else on Earth. The burrow becomes an underground ecosystem, a fortress against Florida's summer heat and winter cold. When one tortoise abandons a burrow after decades, other animals move in immediately: it's the most valuable real estate in the sandy Southeast.
