• When a frill-necked lizard feels threatened, it unfurls a disk of skin around its head that can stretch to nearly 30 centimetres across — wider than a dinner plate. The frill is supported by elongated cartilage rods connected to the jaw, and when relaxed it lies flat against the shoulders like a collapsed parachute. This sudden expansion, paired with a loud hiss and bright mouth lining, turns a 60-centimetre lizard into something that looks twice as wide and far more dangerous than it actually is.
• The frill-neck climbs trees headfirst, something most lizards avoid. Its claws grip bark so effectively that it can pause mid-ascent and hang almost motionless, waiting to ambush insects crawling across the trunk. This hunting method works because insects moving through the forest canopy rarely look up — the lizard becomes invisible simply by staying still against wood and shadow.
• Unlike most lizards that rely on speed to hunt or escape, the frill-neck is built for patience and camouflage. Its mottled grey-brown scales match tree bark so precisely that a stationary lizard can vanish entirely when surrounded by shadows and lichen. This strategy only fails when the lizard panics — then the frill flares, it drops to the ground, and it runs on its hind legs like a feathered dinosaur, which is exactly what it looks like.
• The frill-neck's frill is nearly useless in combat and inflated by fear, not aggression. When a predator actually strikes, the frill collapses instantly and the lizard's only real defence is to bolt or bite. The display evolved not to fight larger animals, but to startle them long enough for the lizard to escape — a bluff that works precisely because most predators hesitate at the unexpected.
• In the warm, wet highland forests of New Guinea where frill-necks live, they are mostly active during the warmest parts of the day when insect activity peaks. Unlike lowland lizards that bask openly on rocks, frill-necks warm themselves by climbing into filtered sunlight near the forest canopy, staying partially shaded while their dark scales absorb heat through the leaves. This behaviour keeps them visible to fewer predators and closer to their prey.
