• Adult glossy black idia moths take to the air from May through September, spanning the late-spring to early-autumn months. Their flight period coincides with the warm season across their broad North American range, which extends from Canada down to Florida and Texas. In the southern part of this range they can produce several generations within a single year, taking full advantage of the extended warm period.
• The glossy black idia has a wingspan of 24-36 mm. It belongs to the litter moth group within the Erebidae family and was first described by Carl Geyer in 1832.
• Glossy black idia larvae consume a variety of fungi and lichens that grow on the forest floor, providing them with essential nutrients. They are also thought to feed on other organic material such as rotting wood and grass, expanding their diet to the abundant detritus of deciduous woodlands. This flexible feeding habit allows the caterpillars to thrive in the litter layer where such resources are plentiful.
