• When a wasp beetle feels threatened it emits a buzzing sound that closely resembles that of a true wasp, a behaviour that reinforces its visual mimicry. Despite this aggressive-sounding display the insect poses no danger to people and cannot sting. Its black and yellow pattern and quick movements further deter potential attackers, although birds remain its main natural predators.
• Fully grown larvae of Clytus arietis finish their development by building a pupal chamber that runs parallel to the wood grain and measures between three and five centimetres in length. This cell is situated at the terminus of the tunnel they have excavated through dead wood. Pupation then takes place either in early autumn, during September or October, or it is delayed until the following spring, allowing the emerging adult to appear in the warm months.
• The wasp beetle completes its entire life cycle in roughly two years, spending most of that time as a larva inside dry, decaying wood. Adults emerge in May, a brief window during which they locate mates, reproduce, and then die by the end of summer. Occasionally, larvae that have developed in firewood stored indoors may remain dormant for several additional years, only to emerge from furniture when conditions become suitable.
• Both sexes produce a brief courtship song during mating encounters. The species also exhibits a 'lick-tapping' display during courtship.
• Males perform a distinctive 'lick-tapping' ritual, rhythmically ducking their heads toward the female while stroking her with palps that release concentrated female scent. This combined motion likely calms the female and stimulates copulation.
