Fascinating facts about the Giant Clam

• A giant clam's shell can weigh as much as a grand piano and span 1.2 metres across — yet the animal inside filters its food from water, not by hunting. Instead, millions of zooxanthellae algae live inside its tissue, photosynthesising in sunlight and feeding the clam in return. This partnership is so complete that a giant clam can survive on algae alone, making it one of the only large molluscs that doesn't need to eat anything else.
• When a shadow crosses a giant clam's open shell, it snaps shut in 0.3 seconds — faster than you can blink. Sensors along the shell's rim detect the change in light, triggering a neural impulse to its giant adductor muscle, which can exert a closing force of over 3,700 kilograms. This speed trap protects against predators, but has also claimed human fingers: the grip is powerful enough to hold a person in place.
• A giant clam can live for over 100 years, growing roughly 1 centimetre per year after it settles as a microscopic larva on a reef. One specimen collected in the 1980s showed growth rings indicating an age of at least 103 years — meaning it was already middle-aged when Columbus sailed to the Caribbean. Their longevity makes them living libraries of reef health, but also slow to recover from fishing pressure.
• The giant clam's mantle — the colourful tissue lining its shell — comes in electric blues, greens, golds, and reds, each colour from different strains of zooxanthellae algae living in the same animal. Brighter colours indicate a healthier partnership with the algae and a better-fed clam. This living palette also helps the clam concentrate sunlight, acting like a fibre-optic system to deliver more light to the depths of its tissues where the algae live.
• In the 1970s, giant clams were harvested so heavily across the Indo-Pacific that populations crashed by over 90 per cent in some regions — poachers valued the shell and the muscle for export. Today, they are farmed in hatcheries and replanted on degraded reefs, but wild populations remain vulnerable. Protecting these clams means protecting the reef architecture that holds entire ecosystems together.
