About the Fungoid Frog

The fungoid frog, Hydrophylax malabaricus, lives from Bombay to Kerala in the Western Ghats, where it inhabits the forest floor and lower vegetation. Its upper parts vary in colour from brownish-red to bright crimson, with white spots on the upper lip and flanks. The head is moderately depressed, the snout is short and subacuminate, and the tympanum is very distinct, nearly as large as the eye. The fingers are moderate with swollen tips, and the toes are rather short, half-webbed with swollen tips; a large rounded tubercle is present at the base of the fourth toe. The skin is finely granulate with a broad, not very prominent glandular lateral fold and a strong glandular fold from below the eye to the shoulder. The tibio-tarsal articulation reaches the tympanum or the eye.
