Allegheny Mountain Dusky Salamander

Fascinating facts about the Allegheny Mountain Dusky Salamander

• Stretching from the Adirondack foothills of New York down to the peaks of the Appalachian Mountains, this salamander also clings to a few isolated pockets in southeastern Quebec, northeast Kentucky and west-central Georgia. Its range includes temperate forests, rocky streams and seepage areas, meaning it thrives only where cool, shaded water and leaf litter create a constantly damp environment, habitats that are fragmented by logging and development.
• Females lay between three and 27 eggs in shallow, moss-lined cavities and then guard them for 52-69 days, rarely leaving to feed. Remarkably, a mother will adopt stray eggs she finds, caring for them as her own, while disturbed females may even eat their clutch.
• In Canada, two separate populations, one in Ontario's Niagara Glen and another in southern Quebec, are listed as endangered under the Species at Risk Act (2009 and 2021). Ontario's Endangered Species Act (2007) and the Niagara Parks Act forbid killing or disturbing these salamanders, and a Dusky Salamander Recovery Team works on recovery plans. Legal protection highlights how localized threats, like habitat loss and water table changes, can push a widespread species to the brink in specific regions.
• A lungless salamander, the Allegheny Mountain dusky salamander must keep its skin wet to breathe, so it lives under stones, logs and bark where water seeps from springs or streams.
