- The forest giant squirrel is Africa's biggest tree-dwelling squirrel, with a head-and-body length of about 300 mm and a bushy tail of similar size, giving it a balanced silhouette high in the canopy. Its head is large and rounded, equipped with powerful cheek muscles that help it handle food. It spends most of its time in the upper layers of the forest canopy, only rarely descending to the ground.
- This solitary, diurnal squirrel forages mainly for fruits and seeds, and it can crack open the very tough nuts of Panda oleosa, Coula edulis, Klainedoxa gabonensis, Elaeis and Irvingia species. In addition to nuts, the diet includes other plant material and a very small proportion of insects, providing a varied but primarily plant-based intake.
- The long, bushy tail of the forest giant squirrel serves as a visual signalling device, with different messages conveyed when it is displayed upwards versus downwards. Its upper side shows broad black bars separated by narrow white ones, while the underside bears equal-sized black and white longitudinal stripes, creating a distinctive pattern visible in dense foliage.
- Each individual defends a home range of a few hectares, actively keeping other squirrels away from its feeding trees. When another squirrel approaches, it will drive the intruder off the branch. The species lives alone and is active by day, foraging in the upper canopy for fruits, seeds and tough nuts. Its territory size and aggressive defence help it maintain exclusive access to food resources.
- Its nest is built in a tree cavity whose opening is just large enough for the animal to squeeze through. Inside, it lines the cavity with twigs still bearing green leaves, creating a snug, leafy shelter. The squirrel emerges at dawn, spends the day feeding in the canopy and returns to the nest many hours later. This timing lets it rest safely while staying close to its foraging grounds.
