• The flamboyant cuttlefish can literally walk across the ocean floor, a behaviour that no other cuttlefish displays. This ability stems from its cuttlebone, which unlike most cuttlefish lacks an outer cone, leaving the animal with a very small buoyancy organ. Because the cuttlebone is tiny the animal cannot remain suspended in the water column for long, so it habitually uses its broad, blade-like arms to amble along the substrate.
• The muscle tissue of the flamboyant cuttlefish is highly toxic, making it only the third cephalopod known to be poisonous. Toxicology work has shown that the toxin it carries is chemically identical to that of the blue-ringed octopus, a well-known venomous marine animal. Although some later studies detected only trace amounts of tetrodotoxin, those concentrations were judged too low to affect vertebrates.
• When they hatch, flamboyant cuttlefish are already capable of producing the same intricate camouflage patterns seen in adults, allowing them to blend with their surroundings from the moment they emerge. The eggs start out white and become translucent, revealing the developing young inside, and the hatchlings receive no parental care. This precocial development means the juveniles must fend for themselves immediately, hunting and avoiding predators on their own.
• When threatened, this cuttlefish flashes a striking colour scheme of black, dark brown, white and yellow patches that cover its mantle, arms and eyes, while the tips of its arms turn a vivid red. It displays this warning pattern during daylight hours, when it is active hunting fish and crustaceans on the sea floor. The bright red arm tips are shown while the animal walks or ambles along the substrate, a behaviour that advertises its poisonous flesh.
• Because its cuttlebone is tiny, the flamboyant cuttlefish can stay buoyant only for a short time before it begins to sink, which confines it to the bottom waters. Recorded from depths of 3 to 86 metres, it is most often seen on sand or mud substrates where it moves by walking rather than swimming. This limited buoyancy forces the animal to remain near the sea floor, where it can employ its broad, blade-like arms to amble across the substrate while hunting.
