Fascinating facts about the Firefly beetle

• Males perform a distinctive J-shaped flight, lighting up on the upswing, which gave rise to the name big dipper firefly. The looping trajectory is paired with flashing signals to draw females.
• Both sexes glow. The light organ spans the last three abdominal segments in males and only the second-to-last segment in females.
• The larval stage can linger for up to two years before the beetle finally pupates. Such a prolonged underground phase lets the young feed on worms, slugs and snails.
• Some Photuris fireflies, which lack lucibufagins, attack male P. pyralis to steal these steroid compounds. By ingesting the stolen chemicals they gain the same unpalatable defence.
• A male flashes every 5 to 7 seconds. He then waits for a responding flash from the female, which arrives after a 1 to 2 second delay.
