• A worker ant lifts and carries objects 100 times her own body weight — the equivalent of a human hauling a fully loaded semi-truck across a room. Crematogaster scutellaris uses her oversized legs and fused body segments to generate leverage that rivals any strength-to-weight ratio in the animal kingdom, and she'll do it hundreds of times a day without fatigue.
• When threatened, these ants raise their abdomens over their heads like scorpions and spray formic acid from a gland at the tip — a bluff that works on spiders and beetles far larger than themselves. The acid burns on contact. They're named 'acrobat ants' for this distinctive backbend posture, which scientists in the 1950s thought was purely defensive until they realised it's also used for steering while climbing smooth vertical surfaces at speed.
• A single colony can contain 30,000 workers and multiple queens, all coordinating raids on neighbouring colonies without a leader directing them. They use pheromone trails laid down by scouts — chemical breadcrumbs — that allow thousands of individuals to navigate the same route simultaneously, sometimes bridging gaps of 50 metres between their nest and a food source.
• These ants are farming insects called mealybugs in a relationship as intimate as any between plants and pollinators. The ants protect the mealybugs from predators and parasites, move them to better feeding sites on plants, and in return harvest the sweet honeydew the mealybugs produce. A single colony can tend to herds numbering in the tens of thousands.
• Mediterranean acrobat ants mate only once in their lives, but that single encounter floods the queen's body with enough sperm to lay eggs for up to 15 years — a biological insurance policy that keeps her colony growing long after the male has died. Her ovaries are built to store and ration those sperm with precision, prioritising soldiers or workers depending on what the colony needs most.
