• A summer azure's wings measure just 23 to 29 mm across. Its upper side shimmers pale blue, dusted heavily with white scales, especially on the hindwing, while some females swap most of that blue for white, leaving only a hint near the wing bases. The forewing's outer third and costa bear a broad blackish-grey band in females.
• From mid-June until early October, summer azures take to the air in a staggered wave that can produce two or three generations in the southern part of their range.
• Caterpillars of the summer azure are picky eaters, feeding on a narrow list of host plants that includes New Jersey tea, dogwoods, and meadowsweet.
