The beetle mixes luciferin and luciferase inside specialized cells, creating a cold-light reaction that hasn't changed in 100 million years of evolution. When threatened, some larvae flash in frantic bursts, a behaviour that doesn't match the slow, steady courtship signal of adults, suggesting they evolved different languages for different survival situations. • Firefly populations in Southeast Asia are vanishing where forests fragment and light pollution bleeds into woodland edges — artificial night lights drown out their signals and throw off their magnetic navigation, leaving males flying blind for mates. A roadside or village outskirts where a forest used to pulse with thousands of synchronized flashes now goes dark by 10 p.m. The beetle doesn't need poison or habitat loss to disappear; it just needs us to leave the lights on.
