Fascinating facts about the Fin Whale

• The fin whale is the only animal on Earth with an asymmetrical body — its left side is dark grey, its right side pale white. Scientists still don't know why. The right jaw is white too, while the left is dark. This lopsided colouring extends even to the baleen plates inside its mouth. They're the second-largest animal ever to live, hitting 24 metres long and 70 tonnes, yet this fundamental mystery about their body plan remains unsolved.
• A fin whale can gulp 500 tonnes of water in a single feeding lunge — then expel it through baleen plates while keeping the krill inside. They accelerate to 40 km/h in that moment, their heart pumping 250 beats per minute. A human heart at maximum exercise hits 180. The physics of how they perform this feat without snapping their own ribs reveals something odd: their left and right ribcages are built differently, asymmetrical down to the bone.
• Fin whales produce the loudest sustained calls of any animal — 188 decibels underwater, a low-frequency moan that carries across entire ocean basins. Two whales thousands of kilometres apart can hear each other. We decoded these calls in the 1960s and thought we'd found whale language. Fifty years later, we still can't translate a single sentence. They may be singing, navigating, finding mates, or something we have no frame of reference for.
• In the 1930s, whaling fleets killed 30,000 fin whales a year. By 1974, when hunting largely stopped, their population had crashed from roughly 500,000 to 120,000. Today they number around 100,000 — a recovery that sounds positive until you realise their population is still climbing so slowly that we cannot yet confirm they're truly rebounding. They live 80+ years and breed just once every 2–3 years, making them too slow to bounce back from what we did.
• A fin whale's tongue alone weighs 2 tonnes — as much as an adult car. It sits on the ocean floor of their mouth and does almost none of the heavy lifting during feeding; instead, the baleen plates do the filtering work. That colossal tongue is so large it can barely fit back in their mouth when they close it. Evolution gave them this anatomical overkill seemingly for no reason we can articulate, a leftover from some ancestor whose feeding strategy we'll never fully understand.
