• A butterfly the size of a postage stamp can lay 200 eggs in a single afternoon — and its caterpillar will be ready to pupate in just 21 days. Most butterflies take months. The fiery skipper's life cycle is so fast it can squeeze in three or four generations between spring and autumn, turning a single female into thousands of descendants before winter arrives.
• Watch a fiery skipper in sunlight and its wings flash copper-red and gold, but tilt your head and the colour vanishes — the red is structural, created by the way light bounces off microscopic ridges on the wing scales, not by pigment.
