Humans see only solid colour. The pattern exists in two wavelengths of light at once, invisible to our eyes but blazingly obvious to butterfly vision, revealing a hidden language written in ultraviolet ink across the desert.
• A southern dogface caterpillar feeds almost exclusively on plants in the legume family — alfalfa, clover, mesquite — and when spring rains fail across the American Southwest, entire populations vanish within weeks because their host plants dry out. • The southern dogface is one of North America's longest-lived butterflies for its size, surviving 2–4 weeks as an adult when most butterflies live 10 days or fewer. This extended lifespan lets them navigate boom-bust desert conditions: in good years they breed multiple generations, but in drought years their longevity keeps populations alive long enough for food plants to recover.
• A single southern dogface can migrate over 1,000 kilometres — remarkable not for the distance but because entomologists spent decades assuming butterflies this small lacked the fuel capacity to migrate at all.
