Fascinating facts about the Meadow Brown

• Meadow browns span a continent-wide belt, living south of 62°N across Europe, Russia to the Urals, Asia Minor, Iraq, Iran, North Africa and the Canary Islands. Their sheer spread forces them into every edge of forest, steppe and meadow up to 2,000 m altitude, even into cultivated fields, parks and orchards.
• Males and females wear very different coats: the male's upperside is a uniform light brown with a single black eye-spot edged in white, while the female adds a tawny patch around the same spot. On the hindwing underside they can carry up to twelve tiny eyespots, as many as six on each wing, though some individuals have none. Males keep a cryptic look to stay hidden while flying far, whereas females can flash their brighter spots to startle predators, boosting their escape chances.
• Each summer a single generation of meadow browns hatches, the species is univoltine, producing one brood per year, but adults appear over a long stretch from spring through autumn. Some larvae develop quickly and emerge as late-season adults, a timing that is under genetic control.
• Across its range the meadow brown splits into several subspecies, each tied to a region: M. j. hispulla lives in Portugal and Spain, M. j. hyperhispulla is confined to the Maltese island of Gozo, M. j. jurtina occupies most of Europe from Sweden eastward, and M. j. janira spreads through central Europe into the Urals and western Siberia.
• The meadow brown's life starts on a single blade of grass where the egg sits upright, ribbed and flattened on top with an impressed ring. As it ages the shell turns from whitish-green toward brownish-yellow and is speckled with purplish brown.
